GDC Golems

I've been doing a lot of sketching lately, but it's all for a secret project at Kabam. But this week I went to GDC - the Game Developers Coinference - and attended a talk by the wonderful Scott Campbell. He talked about his process for creating characters and we spent the last 20 minutes of the session voting on a concept to draw -  he had prepared references for three different ideas - and then drawing them ourselves. The concept idea we were all working on was "a sneaky Golem who lives under a rock and is friends with rocks." Here are my three favorite sketches that I did at the session:

Sorry it's not a full-color painting, but I think they're kinda cute.

Facebook page

I've started a Facebook page for my artwork. I'll still post here, but Facebook might be a more direct way to reach more people. You can find my page here. I hope that, if you are so inclined, you will Like my page. Thanks!

Gothic Red Riding Hood

Another piece done for a local steampunk con (but a different con than the last one.) This year's Clockwork Alchemy has the theme of 'Gothic Fairy Tales,' so I was inspired to make this painting. Maybe they'll use it, maybe they won't, but I'm still happy with it.

While at this size it looks similar to many of my other pieces, I actually did something different this time and only used chalk brushes to color it:

Mechanic for ImagineFX

And here's the slightly larger final piece from the February 2013 ImagineFX magazine:

This differs slightly from the one in the magazine: After publishing, someone pointed out that the chest was concave in places, so I repainted some of the lighting to make it look better.

Steampunk How-to Article

This month's (February 2013) ImagineFX magazine features a lot of steampunk artwork, including a comprehensive walkthough of my process to create a steampunk woman. Not only is there an article by me but video as well showing my entire process (or some of it, anyway: I recorded 25+ hours of video, recording the entire creation of the piece. I doubt they used every minute of it!)

Check it out - it should be on your newsstand now! (And I'll post the full painting later.)

Olympus Mons

So that sketch I showed in December? I colored it in. Here's the finished painting:

New Steampunk piece in progress

I haven't done a REAL painting in far too long. By "real," I mean something more story-driven, something with an actual background, and something with the kind of humor that my pieces are generally known for. I've been doing all these steampunk women portraits, which is in some ways a cheat because I hardly ever paint full background or have any thought deeper than "She sure looks good in a corset!" (That's an exaggeration, as several of my steampunk ladies have had full backgrounds and story - Silver Streak and Erin most notably.) But I've started on something a bit more developed.

Nova Albion, one of two local steampunk conventions, is returning after an absence and the theme is "Steampunks in Spaaaaaace!" I let them use some of my art for the previous proposed theme, "Vikings and Villains and Celts, oh my!" (In fact, that's the whole reason behind painting Erin.) But now they need some space-related art, so I'm happy to oblige: I'm really enjoying working on this illustration. Here's the more-or-less finished line-art for part of it. The entire piece is a landscape, so there's more than this... check back later.
